EU adopts data retention laws despite industry and civil society objections
The European Union today adopted a highly controversial Directive requiring ISPs to collect and retain detailed subscriber data for a minimum of six months (individual states can require longer periods). EU civil liberties groups have condemned the directive as establishing the largest monitoring database in the world, and as treating ordinary citizens like common criminals.
